With the success of Philippine-made ripe mango products in the global market, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now conducting a research project which aims to produce world class products from green mango.
Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (PCIERD) science research specialist II Katrina Batang said that the Council has an ongoing research on green mango as an all-natural juice drink.
The research is being led by its sister agency, Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).
According to Batang, DOST is tapping green mango due to its rich source of Vitamins, adding that positive laboratory results indicate its potential in reducing malnutrition in the country. The green mango juice drink will be fortified with Vitamins A and C and will be packed in 200 milliliter (mL) polyethylene (PE) foil standard up pouches.
She said the project includes the formulation of the green mango juice drink based on the Recommended Energy Nutrient Intake (RENI), sensory evaluation and shelf life testing.
The project will be piloted in Villasis, Pangasinan by a private company. The project is funded under DOST’s Technology Incubation for Commercialization (TECHNICOM) program at P377,000 and will end in December this year.
Mango is rich in a variety of phytochemicals and nutrients. It is high in prebiotic dietary fiber, Vitamin C, polyphenols and carotenoids. It also contains antioxidants.
In 2007, an estimated 181,000 hectares of land is planted to mango in the country.
